Key Characteristics

  • Flowers: The mix includes vibrant double blooms in a range of colours such as mauve, orange, white, yellow, and cerise/pink. The double petals give the flowers a full, ruffled, and soft appearance.
  • Fragrance: Known for their characteristic, strong, and sweet fragrance, which makes them a popular choice for planting near seating areas or for bringing indoors.
  • Height: Plants typically grow to an eventual height of 30-45cm (approx. 12-18 inches) on arching stems.
  • Foliage: Features attractive, narrow, sword-shaped, mid-green leaves.
  • Usage: Ideal for patio pots, containers, borders, and are long-lasting as cut flowers.

Cultivation and Care

  • Position: Freesias thrive in a sunny, sheltered location with well-drained soil.
  • Planting: Plant corms (bulb-like structures) around 7-10cm deep after the danger of frost has passed in spring (April to May is ideal). For a continuous display of flowers, plant corms at intervals of 7-10 days.
  • Maintenance: Water regularly during the growing season. Taller varieties may require staking or support as they grow. Feed with a high-potash fertiliser every two weeks once flower stems appear.
  • Overwintering: The corms are considered half-hardy. In most UK areas, it is advisable to lift the corms in autumn after the foliage has died back naturally and store them in a cool, dry, and frost-free place until the following spring.
