Product description

Begonia 'White Cascading' is a popular, elegant tuberous begonia variety known for its abundant, double-white flowers and distinct trailing habit, making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets and containers.

Key Characteristics

  • Flowers: Produces lush, frilly, double-white blooms that elegantly spill over the edges of pots, creating a "shower bouquet" effect. Individual flowers can be quite large, especially in "Giant Cascading" varieties.
  • Height & Spread: Typically grows to a height of 30-40cm (approx. 12-16 inches) with a similar spread, ideal for elevated displays.
  • Flowering Period: A long-lasting summer favourite, flowering continuously from June/July until the first autumn frosts (October/November).
  • Foliage: Features attractive, deep green, sword-shaped leaves that complement the bright blooms.
  • Usage: Primarily used in hanging baskets, window boxes, and containers where its trailing habit can be fully appreciated.

Cultivation and Care

  • Position: Thrives in partial shade or dappled sun but can also tolerate full sun if sheltered from strong winds which can damage the large blooms.
  • Planting: Plant the tubers in early spring with the hollow side facing upwards, just covered by a fine layer of compost. Plant them outdoors after all danger of frost has passed, usually from May onwards.
  • Soil: Requires a rich, moist, but well-drained garden soil.
  • Maintenance: Requires regular watering, ensuring consistent moisture without waterlogging the tubers. Feed with a high-potash liquid fertiliser during the growing season to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms.
  • Overwintering: The tubers are tender (half-hardy) and must be lifted in autumn, dried, and stored in a cool, dark, frost-free location over winter.
