Begonia 'Feathered Sun' is an eye-catching, upright tuberous begonia variety known for its very large, showy, ruffled flowers and vibrant two-tone coloration. It is ideal for adding a splash of dramatic colour to containers and borders.
Key Characteristics
- Flowers: Produces superb, large, fully double flowers up to 15-20cm in diameter. The colour is a soft yellow in the centre with striking, ruffled orange edges, creating a "feathered" appearance.
- Height: The plant has an upright, compact habit, typically reaching a height of approximately 25cm (10 inches).
- Flowering Period: A continuous and long-lasting bloomer, providing colour from July until the first autumn frosts.
- Usage: Ideal for use in flower beds, borders, patio containers, and window boxes. Its compact size also makes it suitable as a houseplant.
Cultivation and Care
- Position: Begonias thrive in a semi-shaded location but will also bloom in full sun. They prefer a sheltered spot away from strong winds which can damage the large blooms.
- Planting: Plant the tubers in early spring with the indented side facing upwards, just covered by a fine layer of compost. Plant them outdoors after all danger of frost has passed, usually from May onwards.
- Soil: Requires a rich, moist, but well-drained garden soil.
- Maintenance: Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but never waterlogged. Feed with a high-potash liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
- Overwintering: The tubers are tender (half-hardy) and must be lifted in autumn and stored in a cool, dry, and frost-free location over winter.
