Lilium 'Viva la Vida'

Lilium 'Viva la Vida' is a show-stopping AOA (Asiatic x Oriental x Asiatic) hybrid lily. It combines the vibrant, upward-facing form of Asiatic lilies with the larger flower size and faint fragrance typically found in Orientals.

Key Characteristics

• Flowers: Features large, trumpet-shaped blooms of sunny golden-yellow with dramatic burgundy-red flames, streaks, and dark speckles radiating from the centre.
• Height: Reaches a mature height of approximately 80cm to 1 metre (32-40 inches).
• Fragrance: Unlike most Asiatic lilies, this hybrid often possesses a light, sweet scent.
• Bloom Period: Flowers in mid-summer, typically from June through August.
• Usage: Its sturdy stems make it a premier choice for cut flower arrangements. It is also highly attractive to bees and butterflies.

Cultivation & Care

• Position: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers its "head in the sun and feet in the shade," which can be achieved by planting among lower perennials or using mulch.
• Planting: Plant bulbs in spring or autumn. Place them 15-20cm deep and roughly 15-20cm apart.
• Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil. While adaptable, it performs best in neutral to slightly acidic soil. Use ericaceous compost if growing in pots in alkaline areas.
• Hardiness: Rated as very hardy (H6), capable of surviving temperatures down to -15øC.

Important Warning

Viva la Vida lilies are highly toxic to cats. Ingesting even a small amount of pollen or water from a vase can cause fatal kidney failure. They are generally safe for dogs and horses.
