Lilium 'Tiger Moon' is a magnificent Oriental trumpet (Orienpet) hybrid. It is celebrated for its massive, downward-arching blooms and an intoxicating scent that can fill an entire garden.
Key Characteristics
- Flower Colour: Large, funnel-shaped flowers in a sophisticated creamy-white to pale primrose yellow. The petals are marked with a deep bronze-crimson central stripe and heavily speckled with dark burgundy spots.
- Bloom Size: Truly impressive, with individual flowers often reaching 15-20cm in diameter.
- Height: A statuesque variety, typically reaching 1 metre to 1.2 metres (approx. 4 feet) once established.
- Fragrance: Features a heavy, sweet perfume, particularly powerful in the evening.
- Bloom Period: Flowers during the height of summer, typically throughout July and August.
Cultivation and Care
- Planting: Best planted in autumn or early spring (March-May). Bulbs should be placed 15-20cm deep in well-drained soil.
- Soil: Unlike some Oriental lilies, 'Tiger Moon' is more tolerant of different soil types but thrives in neutral to slightly acidic soil. In heavy clay, add grit to improve drainage.
- Position: Prefers full sun or partial shade. As with most lilies, they enjoy "cold feet and a warm head"-keep the roots cool by planting among low-growing perennials or applying a thick mulch.
- Pests: Watch out for the Red Lily Beetle; check the undersides of leaves regularly from early spring.
Toxicity Warning
All parts of this lily are highly toxic to cats. Ingestion can cause fatal kidney failure. Use caution when planting in gardens frequented by feline pets.
